1. Hello, how many books could I borrow with the student card each time?

In general, there are differences in the number of books borrowed by undergraduates, Master students and PhD students. Undergraduate students can borrow 20 general books and hold them for 21 days. Honors college students can borrow 30 general books and hold them for 21 days. Graduate students can borrow 40 general books and hold them for 90 days. PhD students can borrow 60 general books and hold them for 120 days.

2. Why we have to sign the “Reader data transfer declaration”for borrowing service?

As the University Library system has been upgraded, all library users are required to read and fill in the declaration at the relevant webpage (MY LIBRARY ACCOUNT at account.icto.um.edu.mo). Readers' data (such as user account, user account code, patron type, patron name, email address, faculty/unit) will be transferred to overseas cloud servers for working storage. If you did not sign this declaration, the library system did not have data for processing.

3. How do I borrow books from the library?

After Reader data transfer declarationfilled out, you can present your UM Campus Card at the Circulation Counter of the library, or use Self Check-Out System with UM Campus Card, for the Check-Out process.

4. Hello, would you tell me where the Circulation Counter in the Library is?

Zone C at the Ground Floor of the Library, closer to the back entrance.

5. What are the working hours for Circulation Counter?

In general, counter service hours are from 09:00 to 20:30 from Monday to Friday, and from 10:00 to 17:30 on Saturday and Sunday. For the latest information, please refer to the Library Website at https://library.um.edu.mo/lib_info/openhours_en.

6. I have checked the status of the book, which I want to borrow, in the Library system and it shows it is available. However I can’t find it on the bookshelves, what can I do?

As the Library has an Open Shelf policy, you are advised to check the correct bookshelves again after a day or several hours because the requested book might be temporarily unavailable at the bookshelves for a variety of reasons, such as being used by another reader, the process of re-shelving, stolen and so on.

If you are still not able to locate the book, you can approach the Circulation Counter at the G/F of the Library for help.

7. How can I renew my borrowed books?

You may renew books prior to the due date in several ways:

  • Log on “My Library Account” on the landing webpage of UM Library, select the books from your borrowing record under “LOANS” and click the “Renew” button.; or
  • Inform the Library by email (lib_renewal@umac.mo). (Please provide the following information: your name, UM Campus Card’s number, book title and its barcode number); or
  • Come to the Circulation Counter along with your borrowed books.

8. Hello, my book is on due today, but as the library is temporarily closed, what should I do?

You can choose to renew the borrowing items on due. Please log on “My Library Account” ” on the landing webpage of UM Library, select the books from your borrowing record under “LOANS” and click the “Renew” button. The new due date will be shown after successful renewal.

Or, you can choose to return the borrowing items with the Library Book Drop. The Library will process the books returned on the next working day. You can login your library account to check the returning record after that.

9. I have found my borrowing items being overdue, what should I do? Is there any penalty for late return?

Borrowers are responsible for returning their loans on or before the due date. In case of late return, borrowers will receive overdue notices and suspension of the borrowing privileges as presented hereunder.

10. The book I want is checked out. How can I place a hold on it?

To hold the book, please login with the Catalog system, click the “Request” link on the bibliographic record of the requested book, and then fill up the online form to hold it.

You will be notified once the requested book is available. You must pick up the book at the Circulation Counter within 7 days of being notified. Otherwise, the book will be put back on the shelf.

11. If I lost the Library’s book, how do I compensate for it?

If you have confirmed that you have lost a library item, you should fill out the “Declaration of Lost Materials Form”, which is available at https://library.um.edu.mo/lib_services/forms/pdf/Declaration_of_Lost_Damaged_Materials_Form.pdf .

Please present the form by either sending it through email to lib_circ@um.edu.mo, or submitting to the Circulation Counter at the G/F of the Library during the counter service hours. Then you will get an email about the price of the lost item within 3 working days.

After the email received, please come to the Circulation Counter for settlement. You can either choose:

1) To pay twice the item cost as fine

2) To purchase another new copy for replacement with handling charges at MOP60.00

Kindly note that all fees are nonrefundable.

12. Hello, may I borrow the book from the Library as an outside user?

13. What are the costs for different groups of users to conduct the Library Borrower’s Card?

14. Can alumni use the E-resources subscribed by the Library?

Those, who have joined the UM Alumni Association and hold the valid UM Alumni Association membership card, may approach to the Circulation Counter to request using the E-resources in the Library. (The use of E-resources is allowed in the Library only).
